I know that a lot of people are intimidated when it comes to trying something new. And of course, trying out a new sport, a new exercise class, or going to a new gym can be kind of scary. There's the fear of failure, fear of looking silly, fear of doing the wrong thing, fear of getting laughed at as you stumble your way around. There's an infinite number of things of which to be afraid.
I'm here to tell you that it is pointless to be afraid of any and all of these things! Being afraid is a waste of energy. It holds you back from trying new things and from learning new skills and from experiencing a whole lot of fun stuff in the world.
I'm also here to tell you that you are not alone! It can be a common and natural thing, to fear the unknown. In fact, on Monday afternoon, I'm going to a new gym to try a kickboxing workout for the very first time. And yes, I'm a little nervous about it! I'm afraid I won't do it right, I won't do it well enough, I'll get injured, and I'll look like an uncoordinated wimp.
I'll be damned if I'm gonna let a little fear or nerves get in my way. I know that, ultimately, when the initial fear subsides in the first 3 minutes of going to the gym, that then the fun will begin! I'm gonna learn new skills, try a new workout, meet new people, and probably sweat a whole heck of a lot, which is a really good thing in my book.
I'll write a post-workout report to let you know how it goes tomorrow. In the meantime, do NOT let a little fear stop you in your life. Acknowledge it, thank it, then move it out of the way.
Get out there, kick some butt, and conquer the unknown!
